Heritage of Christianity and since 1978 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage
Lalibela has a long Christian tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and is a pilgrimage destination for many Christians.
My pictures are already 45 years old, but I still remember my admiration for the builders of the eleven monolithic churches, which are – mostly multi-storey – carved in red basalt lava. The work went on for at least 100 years.
The access was hidden and after paying an obulus only allowed with a guide. The entry to the churches was forbidden for strangers. (1970)
Lalibela or New Jerusalem is located in the northern former province of Wällo / Ethopia. The place is situated at an anltitude of 2500 meters and has 8484 inhabitants (census 1994), which are almost completely Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
